So much of today’s mantra is “I have to be myself” or “I was born this way”. This thinking is often used as a justification to live a life contrary to God’s standard. The focus is not God-ward but self focused. This is especially disturbing when those who profess to be Christians use this kind of rationale.
The Bible tells us that we have been crucified with Christ and that, we no longer live, but Christ lives in us! The life we now live in the flesh we live by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself for us. (Gal. 2: 20)
Jesus tells us to deny ourselves and to pick up our cross and follow him! (Matt. 16: 24)
These two verses among many others speak volumes about the transformation in our lives. We go from darkness to light, from aliens to citizens and from orphans to sons and daughters! It is no longer about us “the way we were”, but the way we are becoming!
In a culture that calls right as wrong and wrong as right we need to be on our guard to hold fast to Biblical truth where God sets the standard, not an earthly court!
How quickly the Galatians returned to a life of slavery and futile thinking. No matter what our sin we have a God who gives us the power to do what is right in pleasing him! (Phil. 2: 13) And this is the same power that raised Christ from the grave! (Rom. 8: 11)
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained. (Phil. 3: 12-16)
Let us hold true!
